NBA Rumors: Klay Thompson and the Warriors pay attention to Jrue Holiday’s $135M Deal

Klay Thompson, a five-time All-Star shooting guard, and the Golden State Warriors closely monitored Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday’s recent contract extension, as reported by ESPN’s Zach Lowe.

During a recent episode of The Lowe Post, Lowe disclosed that both Thompson and the Warriors were attentive to Holiday’s four-year, $135 million extension signed with the Celtics on April 10. Thompson is currently slated to enter unrestricted free agency in the offseason.

Throughout the 2023-24 season, Thompson fulfilled the remainder of a five-year, $190 million contract he inked with the team back in 2019. Having been drafted 11th overall by Golden State in 2011, Thompson has remained with the team for his entire career.

The 34-year-old sharpshooter experienced a season marked by inconsistency, posting a scoring average of 17.9 points per game, his lowest since 2013. Additionally, he recorded a relatively modest 38.7 percent shooting from three-point range, marking the second-lowest percentage of his career. Head coach Steve Kerr even experimented with utilizing Thompson as a reserve, deploying him off the bench in 14 games during the season.

Shams Charania of The Athletic previously revealed that Thompson turned down a two-year, $48 million extension from the Warriors during the 2023 offseason. With both sides reportedly taking note of Holiday’s contract, they may be considering a long-term deal instead.

The Golden State front office is expected to consider the team’s salary cap situation during potential negotiations, given the organization’s existing $174 million in salary commitments for the 2024-25 season, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

Opposing teams are anticipated to show interest in Thompson’s floor-spacing capabilities, with Sam Amick of The Athletic listing the Dallas Mavericks as a potential suitor for him in free agency.

A long-term agreement resembling Holiday’s extension would likely see Thompson remain in the Bay Area.
