Why Ayesha and Stephen Curry’s Son Canon, 2, Thought the NBA Star ‘Was a Golfer’ for ‘the Longest Time’
“He’s just now realizing that his dad and his uncles play basketball,” Ayesha Curry said of the couple’s youngest child
Stephen Curry, despite being one of the NBA’s most prominent figures, remained relatively unknown to his 2-year-old son Canon until recently.
During a virtual appearance on a recent episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ayesha Curry shared a surprising revelation about their youngest child’s perception of his famous father. She disclosed that Canon, exhibiting typical toddler curiosity, had initially mistaken Stephen’s profession, believing him to be a golfer instead of a basketball star.
Ayesha fondly described Canon as a “boy’s boy,” highlighting his early interest in sports, particularly basketball, as he has already begun to dabble in the game himself.
She explained, “For the longest time, he actually thought his dad was a golfer because of the pandemic and the absence of basketball season.” She elaborated on the family’s pandemic experience, emphasizing how the unusual circumstances had shaped Canon’s understanding of his father’s profession. However, Ayesha expressed delight in the recent realization dawning upon Canon that his dad, along with his uncles, is involved in basketball, marking an exciting discovery for the family.
Canon’s growing awareness of Stephen’s basketball career was evident earlier this year when he joined his father, a star player for the Golden State Warriors, on the court. During a March game against the Utah Jazz, Canon even shared a heartwarming moment with his dad, offering him a high-five—an endearing scene that captured the hearts of fans and showcased the special bond between father and son.
In her conversation with DeGeneres, the founder of Sweet July also discussed the excitement of witnessing her husband’s remarkable season, filled with record-breaking achievements. “It’s absolutely incredible. It’s truly mind-blowing,” she exclaimed, reflecting on his expanding list of accomplishments. “And to think, he’s now one of the older players out there.”
The author of The Seasoned Life further remarked, “It’s been a remarkable experience witnessing him shatter these records, all the while maintaining his humility and modesty. When he returns home, it’s as if nothing extraordinary happened. All he desires is some popcorn and candy.”
Despite the Warriors’ less than stellar performance this season, the two-time MVP has consistently been making history.
In the past month alone, Curry achieved significant milestones, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain to become the Warriors’ top scorer of all time. Additionally, he made NBA history by becoming the first player aged 33 or older to score 30 or more points in 11 consecutive games, eclipsing the late legend Kobe Bryant’s record.
If that weren’t already remarkable enough, Curry achieved another milestone in April by setting a new NBA record for the most 3-pointers made in a single month. By April 25, the father of three had already made 85 shots from beyond the arc, but by the end of the month, that number had increased to 96.
Moreover, just this week, Curry accomplished yet another feat by becoming the fastest player to reach 300 3-point shots in a single season, achieving this milestone in just 58 games.
Draymond Green, Curry’s longtime teammate, recently shared his admiration for Curry’s exceptional skills in an interview with ESPN. Green expressed how impressed he is with Curry’s leadership and how it motivates the team to excel.
“Incredible, man,” Green exclaimed. “The way he’s leading us, it’s been incredible to watch. His scoring is just a byproduct of that—the leadership, the demeanor that he’s displaying on the floor every night, setting an example for everyone.”
